How Safe is Your Food?

The organisms that can make you sick usually do not create an odor or slimy film. Your eyes and nose are not the best detectives. The following are a few ideas to ensure food safety:

Avoid moldy foods: If you see mold on food, do not sniff it. Mold can affect your respiratory system and worsen allergies. If You See Mold, Consider it OLD!

Follow food recalls: Visit www.recalls.gov/food.html frequently to keep up with food that has been recalled.  Recognize the Recalls!

Know what to do when the power goes out: If your power goes out, remember the golden rule to keep the refrigerator and freezer closed! This will keep food cold.

Prevent cross- contamination: Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs separate from other foods. Never cut raw meat on a cutting board you would use for your vegetables or other foods.

Ignore the five-second rule: There are tons of bacteria on floors and other surfaces. Foods pick up this bacteria on contact, so Ditch the Five-Second Rule!

Know your resources: For more information on food safety, you can visit www.fsis.usda.gov
