Stop Starving: Eating Disorder Myths and Tips Disproven

WEEK THREE: Forbidden Eating Times

Myth One: Bedtime Eating

Do not eat after 7 pm: it will sit in your stomach all night, and you won't burn it off.

Reality: The body recognizes certain factors in eating patterns, such as how often one is eating and the different types of nutrients consumed during a meal. A person who works out and has a consistent meal pattern will maintain a consistent metabolism rate after 7 pm. There is no proof that eating after a certain hour is harmful. One easy way to explain the process of weight gain is this: If the energy consumed in food is greater than the energy released through exercise; weight will be gained. Therefore, someone who works out in the evening can and will need nutrients afterward to maintain their metabolism, and it will not sit in the stomach as suggested above.

Myth Two: Eating and Exercise

Do not eat before working out, you will burn more calories off without extra food in your stomach.

Reality: To achieve an optimal workout level the body needs a quick carbohydrate source. The body cannot effectively attempt to gain strength and lean muscle; which helps boost metabolism, without proper fuel prior to working out. In addition, protein and carbohydrates after working out help replenish energy stores to the muscles to create faster recovery and less strain and fatigue days following.
